Reading is the key to everything and we want to instill in all our children a love of reading that will enable them to access a breadth of knowledge and support them in their life journey.
We use the Oxford Reading Tree as well as a range of books offering a phonics based approach to enable our children to apply the phonics they have been taught. We also ensure they have access to read non-fiction books.
Once our children become confident and independent readers we aim to move them on to short novels and then longer novels which appeal to their reading interest.
Our Year 1 children read as a group to develop their comprehension skills through discussion as well as reading 1-1 with a member of staff.
From Year 2 we follow a scheme called 'Cracking Comprehension' which helps the children to break down a text, analyse the components within it, then build it back up again and use this skill to decode and develop their comprehension skills and the ability to both predict and infer.
All our classes have a wealth of books for the children to choose from and we encourage them to read and then change their books on a regular basis.
Almost all subjects within the curriculum involve reading and we aspire to provide our children with a wide range of opportunities to read in different contexts for pleasure as well as for knowledge.
