Sports Premium

Implementing the ‘Sports Premium’ at St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School

The Government has given every Primary School funding to develop Physical Education and competitive sport.

In 2016-2017 we have been given the same allocation as last year - £8 880 Sports Premium.

Membership costs to the Pennine Sports Partnership remains the same at £3 000.

We are using the Sports Premium funding to sustain our membership with the Pennine Sports Partnership and to:

  • Continue to provide access to sports’ specialist teachers and coaches to enable our children to gain new skills and experiences in after school club activities eg: archery, athletics, dance, gymnastics etc £1 000
  • The activities were very well attended and the children enjoyed them, further developing their skills
  • Provide CPD for our KS1 staff in order to further develop the quality of provision £600
  • The CPD was well received and the teachers have a rich resource base on which they can plan and deliver first quality provision, providing sustainability
  • Continue to enable our children to take part in competitive sport
  • Many of our children took part in out of school competitive events as well as intra school events planned and led by either the Pennine Sports Partnership claches or by our PE Leader
  • Continue to encourage our children to improve their leadership skills through sport
  • Our Play Leaders accessed training from the Pennine Sports Partnership and organised games and activities on a regular basis. Our Junior Leadership Team also received training on planning and delivering sports activities across the school
  • Continue to give extra support in PE to our most talented children
  • Some of our children attended events through the Pennine Sports Partnership, including meeting Jessica Ennis Hill, in order to enable them to aspire to be even better
  • Access community sports events
  • Send groups of children to the Halifax Schools’ Swimming Gala £100
  • Our football and netball teams played matches and tournaments throughout the year. Our swimming team also took part in swimming galas with other schools
  • Provide further training for our Lunchtime staff to lead play effectively in KS2 £600
  • Our staff have an increased range of ideas for play initiatives, assisted by our play leaders
  • Provide 'Learn to Ride a Bike' scheme for any children in KS1 who cannot yet ride a bike £1 200
  • All the children who took part made progress and quite a few asked parents for a bike so they could continue their skills
  • Replace the outdoor slide in Nursery, improving physical outcomes for our children £1 000
  • The new slide has been ery popular with the Nursery children and they use it regularly, developing important physical skills among others
  • Provide ‘balanceability’ sessions for those children who cannot yet ride a bike to ensure that they can £700
  • The children all made good progress and their balance overall improved. This impacted on their work in PE also
  • Continue to send groups of children to the Sports Barn in Huddersfield to participate in a range of sports hall athletics £300
  • Our children who attended the Sports Barn loved the experience and the chance to compete with and against other children from Calderdale schools
  • Provide a Skipping Workshop for the children to nurture enjoyment as well as increasing their level of fitness £600
  • As a result skipping is very popular in both Key Stages and Reception class. We invested in more skipping ropes and the children are making very good use of these
  • Subsidise the cost of adventurous activity for our Year 6 children £1 640
  • Our Year 6 children had an amazing tie at Kepplewray enjoying activities they have never done before, and for some, may not do again; activities such as ghyll scrambling, abseiling and canoeing across Coniston Water
  • Provide release for the PE Leader to attend meetings during the year £600
  • The PE Leader has increased in both skills and knowledge. She is disseminating information effectively and monitoring the impact of our sports provision more effectively as a result of the CPD she has had

In 2017-2018 we were initially given the same allocation as last year - £8 880 Sports Premium but we have been informed to expect an increase during the coming year. Once this is confirmed we will discuss the allocation with relevant stakeholders to ensure best value for money.

Membership costs to the Pennine Sports Partnership remains the same at £3 000.

We will:

  • Continue to provide access to sports’ specialist teachers and coaches to enable our children to gain new skills and experiences in after school club activities eg: archery, athletics, dance, gymnastics etc £1 000

  • Provide ‘balanceability’ sessions for those children who cannot yet ride a bike in Reception or Year 1 to ensure that they can £700

  • muga boards for the grassed area to increase the space for team sports
